Lindy's working fine art studio, Old Spanish Trail Studio is tucked away on a mile-high heritage Davis Mountain ranch. We're inside the Davis Mountains Scenic Loop, 20 miles SW of historic Fort Davis, Texas. You'll definitely need to call or email us for directions before heading out.
We'd love to entertain you while you preview new paintings and enjoy the scenery! Cattle roam under pinon and oak, while mule deer often browse near the window by Lindy's easel. You don't have to get all spruced up to visit us. This isn't Dallas, and Lindy's Studio is nothing fancy. But original fine art hangs on its old walls, and The Studio Gallery brims with West Texas hospitality. Let us know when you'd like to come, and we'll put the coffee on!
"I have visited the Big Bend...and have for some time wanted a painting of the area. Alas,...in my view, no-one has actually been able to get the colours right, and if the colours are not right then the atmosphere is not right, either.
I was therefore delighted to come across your website, as the online images look very good indeed – the best I have seen by a long chalk. 'The River Road' embodies how I remember the Big Bend."
~Dr.W.M, London, England Bill bought the painting he describes. Which painting speaks to you? Lindy is always painting something new, so bookmark this site and return whenever you need a quick West Texas fix!

a celebration of plein air painting
Opens October 4, 2013
These wild and empty spaces aren't for everyone. Complex skies swallow you in their splendor. Color on distant horizons turns surreal in the blink of an eye. A road, more often than not leads to a landscape more rugged. The sheer magnificence of these mountains can overwhelm even the most jaded traveler. That's what I love about Big Bend country. That's what I want to share with you.
Enjoy the journey.

BIG BEND ARTIST TIP
PLEIN AIR PAINTING refers to painting on location, painting in the field as opposed to in the studio.
Because light and shadows change constantly, an hour and a half is a rule of thumb for a plein air session, all the time an artist has to capture a landscape on canvas. Because this isn't very long, most artists who paint en plein air work small and loose.
LINDY COOK SEVERNS specializes in large, detailed, time-intensive landscapes. She's a studio painter who also paints on location. Lindy, like many landscape painters, gets around the time limitation of plein air painting by returning to an area several times to finish a painting, by starting a painting on location, then finishing it in the studio from memory and photo references, or by painting small and fast in the field, then recreating that scene as a large studio painting.
Wherever a landscape artist chooses to set up her easel, she seeks to convey a sense of place, of intimacy with the land and sky. Plein air painting and/or much time spent on location allows an artist to carry this deeply felt connection with the landscape back into the studio.
