The #1 most important thing you need to do to become a pastel painter:

Tell your own story in your own voice!
Develop your own style. Find joy in creating.
You don't need a studio full of supplies.
You certainly don't need a tray arranged with thousands of colored sticks. (I started my pastel career with a box of 12)

I believe art is about the process of creation.
There are as many ways to create as there are artists.

My goal as a teacher is to give my students the tools and the confidence to find their own paths and follow them.

By the end of our three (or five) information-intense days, I'll know you and your work. Your head will be swimming with color and value and line and mass, and hopefully, a burning desire to create.

A TYPICAL LINDY SEVERNS PASTEL PAINTING WORKSHOP FORMAT

Morning: discuss materials and technique. Then, I demonstrate in pastels. (See a demo below.)

Afternoon
: workshop artists paint on their own with repeated individual help at each easel.
(Demos are landscapes, but workshop participants may work on whatever subject they wish.)

The supply list is modest, even if you must purchase your first pastels. (Supplies don't make the artist: Heart makes art. Supplies only make the artist happier.)

A LINDY SEVERNS PASTEL WORKSHOP DEMO:

(This will become a pristine blue river of frothing rapids! Scroll to see this Workshop Demo painting in its finished form)

I demonstrate one specific element of a painting each day.  (This means walking into a workshop with an armload of prepared, 3/4 finished paintings, which is one reason I don't teach many workshops!)

Today's lesson: Painting Moving Water.

              9:00 am TUMULTUOUS SPLENDOR
a 12" x 18" pastel of rapids around a volcanic dike in British Columbia looked like this the first time my students saw it:

12x18 pastel preparation for demonstration on painting rushing water Lindy C Severns 2010
Before the workshop began, I painted everything except the S mass of rushing water, all painting done over a red toned canvas which still shows in the S that will become water. This is Nupastel stroked lightly over the entire surface, then brushed with water to bind the pigment into the museum grade Kitty Wallis pastel paper I always use.

I do this much of each painting prior to the workshop. The segment(s) being taught (in this case, water and finishing touches) are then done in front of the class. Each day has a different painting with a different instruction theme, such as painting sky, painting rocks, painting grass.... And the class is conducted with emphasis not only on the medium but on composition, drawing and design elements common to many kinds of art.

I talk and explain constantly as I paint. Students are welcome to ask questions about the process.

I finish the demo (and thus, the pastel painting) each day at noon:

Go ahead and get your feet wet--set up a Lindy Severns Pastel Painting Workshop in your area!

My infrequent workshops are small, elite, high-energy events jam-packed with technique and information. Teaching less often keeps me excited about sharing my knowledge with my students.
Enrollment is based on 10-18 students, 10 being optimal, if pricier. (I much prefer the smaller group!)
Based on your locale, enrollment and tuition for your group may vary slightly from those listed here.

3 days 10-12 artists
$240/person
13-18 artists $180/person
5 days 10-12
artists

$375/person
13-18 artists $300/person

You'll learn something, no matter where you are coming from.
(Groups of mixed levels are not a problem for me.)
By the end of three or five information-intense days, I'll know you and your work, and your head will be swimming with color and value and line and mass, and hopefully, a burning desire to create joyous art!
