ALONE WITH THE SKY
8" x 8" oil on archival Ampersand Gessobord
a wood cradle on the back makes this miniature oil painting self-framed*
Winter clouds draped the Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park on this winter morning. Delighted at the dramatic sky, I hiked Casa Grande, the "Big House" in the mountains crowning Big Bend.
We fell in love with the borderlands and Big Bend when we were first married. We camped in the relatively lush Basin, being more or less terrified of the harsh desert below. On one of those early trips to the Chisos, a large herd of javelina shuffled into our campsite. Being the only campers in the Basin, we fled to the safety of the top of a nearby picnic table. There we stood, feeling increasingly silly for almost half an hour as a dozen javelina (collared peccary) had their way with our site.
Now, Jim and I relish the solitude of both mountains and desert in Big Bend National Park. And while we still give wildlife their deserved respect, we are no longer terrified by javelinas!

*About the Cradle on the Back:
This original fine art is on an archival board which has been cradled on the back in wood, then hand rubbed in burnished gold. It is ready to hang or to set on a table easel. It will even stand on its own in a bookcase. Though it would be absolutely lovely framed, it is quite elegant and handsome as is. And you get original art without the added expense of a frame!
