A small herd of mule deer frequent our high desert mountainside in West Texas. Since he was a fawn, this buck has been stopping by for water and the handfuls of corn my husband tosses out.
This year, he came into his own and appeared with an impressive rack, a harem of doe and a couple of fawns. His coat was thick and shiny, and in the dappled light, he seemed as much a part of the forest as the fluttering leaves.
I used terra-cotta colored paper for my pastel painting, letting some of that color to connect the buck with the whispering leaves and autumn colors of the landscape in this richly detailed painting.
