LIGHTING THE DESERT NIGHT
5.5" x 10" miniature pastel on archival paper
a miniature color study
This is my pastel rendering of an actual sunset and my first painting of 2016. We spend several weeks in and around Big Bend National Park each winter. On this fine night, we sipped wine outside our RV and watched the sun do the special things the sun does to ready the desert for the night.
I didn't want to get involved in detail here, just wanted to put the colors I saw onto canvas. The interwoven clouds and floating wisps moving across the stratus layers made a stunning composition.
A "study" is a simpler, more rapidly executed artwork than a polished painting. No complex underpainting here, no fine detail on this small canvas. I devoted all my energy to color and shape.
Studies like this one are fresh, lively pieces of fine art that convey the artists' gut response to an experience.
Enjoy Terlingua and it's desert night in this miniature pastel landscape.
