BIG BEND ARTIST TIP: VALUE(This isn't about the worth of a painting. It's a how-to tip for artists. Collector? Stop reading,or risk learning one of Lindy's Painting Secrets.)

VALUE refers to how LIGHT OR DARK a color is. Simple. Right?
Judging the underlying VALUE of a color is tough. COLOR jumps up and down and demands attention. VALUE quietly holds a painting together. (VALUE can be so deceiving.) My complex pastel paintings contain a plethora of colors. Three basic VALUES, however, create the drama. To determine whether two colors share the same value, stroke each color side by side so the edges touch without overlapping.

Now, squint.
See a clear division between the two? They are different values. Simply put, one is lighter, one is darker.

No line? Your two colors share the same value. What value, you ask, is there in knowing this? Using different colors of the same value adds interest and vibrancy to a painting. A dark shadow may contain greens and violets and reds and blues of one value. A white clouds may really be pink and blue and yellow ochre, all the same light value. In Art Speak, this is called "Massing Values". Wow.

Valuable knowledge!
