BIG BEND ARTIST TIP:

PAINTINGS, PAINTING STUDIES AND PAINTING SKETCHES : WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE (and does it matter which you hang on your wall?)

A "painting sketch" or "study" is a looser, less complex painting. The artist emphasizes color, patterns and shapes to capture the essence of the subject without trying to refine the artwork as a whole. You often hear the term "Fresh" applied to studies. Think of them as passionate, wide-eyed and innocent.

Many small PLEIN AIR PAINTINGS (paintings done on location) are STUDIES, artwork created in a very limited time period to express transient light and sense of place. (This is VERY hard to do, which is one reason some collectors hold plein air paintings in such high regard.)

A "painting" is a more complex work of art. A painting contains more layering, more intricate detail, more "polish". In a painting, the artist's passion for the subject is finely expressed and meticulously controlled through nuances of color and light. Time passes and the painting builds and grows. Think of paintings as senior statesmen and wise  matriarchs whose every word carries the weight of a gold bar.

Both Studies and Paintings are Fine Art, and the one is no easier nor harder to do than the other.  It's a matter of purpose: The artist knows, at the first stroke of color, which she's doing. A study, no matter the size, generally sells for significantly less than a painting because less time is involved in creating it.

So which should you buy?

Oh my goodness. Buy the painting you like!
