original pastel landscape painting
SUNSET PAINTS THE TEXAS MOUNTAINS
11.5" x 15.5" pastel on archival paper
framed under UV protective acrylic
This is the view I see when I step out my door most evenings. We live on a mountainside in the high desert of the Texas borderlands, where brown, rather than green is the norm. Sunset changes that. When the low sun drenches these volcanic mountains, the red lava rock glows with an inner light that rivals the sky as a display of color.
In painting this original pastel landscape study in color, I was careful to keep the foreground dark even as I filled the shadowed mountainside with color. The dancing sunset sky painted itself --- no artistic license required for this joyous last light of day extravaganza from a ranch in far West Texas.
