TEXAS DESERT TWILIGHT
24" x 36" original pastel on archival paper
custom, conservation framed under non-reflective museum glass
We winter in Terlingua, Texas in the starkly beautiful desert outside Big Bend National Park in the borderlands of Far West Texas. Dusk colors the desert and the distant mountains of the Chisos in violet and peach and rich blues. I like to imagine jewels sprouting from the hardpack alkaline soil as dusk softens the landscape. It is my favorite time of day, in my favorite time of year in a place that touches my soul like no other. It is as if God is reminding me, with the desert, to slow down, to forget the heat that scorched the day, and to savor the beauty of our world for a few hours before the sun wakes it once more.
This is a richly colored, multi-layered pastel painting that holds an inner glow because of the many layers of underpainting.
